Lok Sabha elections in 2019 and an all important ICC Cricket world cup scheduled to be held from 30th May has forced IPL governing council to start the 12th edition of IPL from 29 March 2019 as per a report by Times Of India. BCCI might be forced to shift out the tournament fully or partially if General Elections takes place in the months from March to May. If this happens, South Africa will be the forerunner to contest the next edition of Indian Premier League.

In 2009, full IPL was shifted to South Africa while in 2014, the first 19 days of the tournament were held in United Arab Emirates.
“The IPL – under the new set of contracts and revenue models – is going to be a billion-dollar entity every season. There’s a lot at stake for many who are committed to the league. Moreover, there’s absolute unanimity among stakeholders that as much as possible, they’d like the league to be played in India, not abroad,” sources said.
A final decision for the start of the 11th edition of IPL will only come out from the board once the Government of India gives its verdict on the dates of General Election.
