The victory against these two South American nation allready made France a contender but up ahead was Belgium in the semi final. In a tough encounter Samuel Umtiti’s goal was the difference as France booked their place in world cup finals after 20 years.
France’s journey has been incredible and they have just managed to improve with every game but the best may still be conserved for the finals.
Croatia’s journey
Croatia were always considered as one of the favourites with the amount of talent they possessed but they faced tough challenge from Argentina, Nigeria and Iceland in group D. Out of everyone’s expectation Zlatko Dalic’s men thumped all three opponents and won the group to see Denmark in the last 16.
Both the teams scored early in the round of 16 clash that was shaping a new story for Croatia as the match went in the extra time but no one scored in the 120 minutes that send the match into penalties where Croatia won 3-2. Next up was Russia in the quarter final, which was always going to be a tough encounter for any team considering the home support for the hosts and the form they were currently in.
Russia gave a tough fight and the match was tied at two goals a piece and the match again went into penalties where Croatia just managed to beat the hosts 4-3 to face the mighty England in the semis.
“The Three Lions” led by Harry Kane draw first blood but Croatia found an equalizer in the second half that took the match to the extra time which was always a positive for Croatia, considering that they played 2 matches earlier in ET. They started to dominate the proceedings and eventually scored in 109′ minute that send England packing from the world cup.
Croatia were a talented team but no one really gave a chance for them to play the world cup finals. They are surely on their dream run by becoming the 13th team in history to reach the WC finals.
