Asian Games 2018: India win a historic bronze medal in Sepak Takraw

Despite loosing to a strong looking Thailand, Indian men’s sepak takraw team created history in Indonesia by winning its maiden medal in the sport. The men’s team lost to Thailand 0-2 to finish at the podium with a bronze medal.

What is Sepaktakraw?

The sport is native to South East Asia and is said to be originated in Malaysia. It can be termed as the kick volleyball. The ball is made up of Rattan and a team have to win three games faster than their opposition. A player can only take three touches on the ball through their feet before it must go to the opposite half.

History of the sport at Asian Games

Sepak takraw was introduced in the Asian Games since 1990. India has participated in the event since 2006 and at their fourth appearance they have secured a historic bronze medal.

Thailand is the most successful team of the event with 22 golds followed by Myanmar with 5 gold.

The sport is quite popular in India’s Manipur because of its juxtaposition to Myanmar.
