The T20 extravaganza is round the corner as Indian women’s team led by their talismanic skipper Harmanpreet Kaur is playing the T20 world cup in West Indies. The women in blue thumped a much fancied opponents in New Zealand in their first game at Guyana. Indian women posted a mammoth total of 194-5 after a brilliant century by skipper Harmanpreet that always proved enough for the Whiter Ferns. India emerged victorious and won the game by 34 runs.

Meanwhile, Indian men’s team led by stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma whitewashed the Windies team 3-0 in the T20 series but the best part came when Indian women’s team faced Pakistan in their second group stage game.

Mithali overtakes Rohit Sharma

Mithali Raj didn’t got a chance to bat against New Zealand but a failed opening combo of Taniya Bhatia and Smriti Mandhan meant that skipper Harmanpreet promoted Mithali up the order in place of Bhatia.

The veteran batswoman certainly didn’t disappoint and notched up 56 runs from just 47 balls. Her innings helped India chase down a target of 134 runs set by Pakistan. In the process, Raj also surpassed Rohit Sharma to become the highest run getter in T20I’s for India.

Rohit has 2207 runs from 87 matches at an average of 33.43 while Raj owns 2232 runs in 84 matches at an average of 37.20.

The battle may continue

Indian women’s team will be certainly sure of qualifying for the semi-finals if they beat Ireland in their next game but in the worst case scenario, Mithali has three more games to take the lead over Rohit Sharma.

Meanwhile, Indian men’s team will also play a three match T20 series against Australia, starting 21 November, where Sharma will have a chance to surpass Raj and become the numero-uno yet again.
