Prithvi Shaw was adjudged the man of the series in his first appearance for the national team in the test series against West Indies, last October. Shaw, 19, amassed 237 runs in three innings of the two test matches to be a dominant force in the white cloth series.
Watching his heroics in the series, India coach Ravi Shastri said that the Mumbai batsman reminds him of Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendular and Brian Lara. “He (Prithvi Shaw) is born to play cricket. He’s been playing since the age of eight in the maidans(grounds) of Mumbai. You can see all that hardwork showing. He’s a spectator’s delight. There’s a bit of Sachin there, a bit of Viru(Virender Sehwag) in him and when he walks, there’s a bit of Lara as well,” Shastri said.
Shaw injured himself before the start of Australia test series last year, and was only back in action in the ongoing IPL season after failing to perform for Mumbai in Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy. Shaw failed to score heavily but made the most of the opportunity in the game against Kolkata Knight Riders at Feroz Shah Kotla where he scored a quickfire 99 runs. His quick flasy stroke like Virender Sehwag were highly admired in the game and former English skipper Michael Vaughan has compared Shaw with the legendary Indian opener.
“I do want to say that he is the nearest I have seen since Virender Sehwag. It is his style of play. The way his hands go away from his body and he opens up the off side. He has got a little bit of a similar movement to Sehwag. As a bowler, I would like to get the ball to nip back in,” Michael Vaughan told Cricbuzz.
Shaw continues to be an integral part of Delhi Capitals unit and will be crucial for the franchise to fire at the top order.
