The cricket world cup started with hosts England thumping South Africa in world cup opener with a massive margin of 104 runs to start their world cup campaign on a high. The world cup got underway on May 30 and will conclude on July 14, with the finals at the iconic Lord’s in London.
England are the firm favourites to lift the trophy, however some experts claim India to be a force to reckon with alongside Australia who are high in confidence after pipping India 3-2 in India and clean sweeping Pakistan 5-0 in United Arab Emirates(UAE). The returning Steve Smith and David Warner will add more strength to the team.
Daren Ganga predicts the semi-finalists
Appearing in a chat show on ESPNCricinfo, Ganga said that the teams with best bowlers will be amongst the favourites. “This is going to be a tournament that is dictated by how well bowlers do. I think teams with more penetrative bowlers will be the teams that are more successful in the tournament. When you look at world cup history, left arm bowlers, they have always been successful. You look at the leading wicket takers in last edition of the world- You see Trent Boult, you think about previous world cups and Wasim Akram even Daniel Vettory is being amongst the wickets.
“So the teams with best bowling combinations, most penetrative, i think are the teams that will prosper in the world cup,” Ganga said.
When asked to choose the semi-finalists, the Trinidad and Tobago born cricketer who has his roots from India said that hosts England, India, New Zealand and his home team- West Indies will make the last four of the show-piece event. Talking about New Zealand he said that the men in black are a very competitive team and will do well in the world cup.
