BJP stalwart and former finance minister Arun Jaitley passed away in AIIMS on Saturday after battling prolonged illness. Jaitley was a brilliant strategist in Narendra Modi’s first government but denied the ministerial role in his second term following his health issues. He also served as a lawyer and was a fond follower of cricket.
Feroz Shah Kotla to be renamed after late Arun Jaitley
The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) has taken a major decision on Tuesday, paying tribute to former Finance Minister and BJP’s stalwart leader Arun Jaitley. The Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium will now be known as the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
It will be renamed in a ceremony on 12 September. A stand in it will also be named after Indian captain Virat Kohli, which was announced earlier. DDCA President Rajat Sharma was a good friend with Jaitley and he announced the news,”It was Arun Jaitley’s support and encouragement that players like Virat Kohli, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Ashish Nehra, Rishabh Pant and many others could make India proud. What can be better to have the stadium named after the man,” Rajat Sharma was quoted as saying by NDTV.
Jaitley is credited with making the stadium equipped with modern facilities and building a world-class dressing room with increased spectator capacity. The ceremony will be held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in which Home Minister Amit Shah and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju will also participate. Jaitley served as a former DDCA President from 1999 to 2013.
