India faced a major setback ahead of the 1st ODI against West Indies, starting Sunday at Chepauk stadium in Chennai. Bhuvneshwar Kumar complained of pain after India registered a convincing 67 run victory against Windies in the 3rd t20 to win the series 2-1. Bhuvi has been struggling from injury in the past 16-20 months and his current situation will certainly not help his cause.
The Uttar Pradesh bowler last played a test match at 2018 South Africa tour where he was named the player of the series. He was out of action after the West Indies tour which started post the 2019 World Cup and made his comeback in the recently concluded T20 series against West Indies.
Shardul Thakur to replace Kumar for the three match ODI series
Fast bowlers career is often cut short by injuries and Ashish Nehra is the best example of it. An injury can be a career ending event in a pacers life as in some instances, he can not be his 100% after he recovers and someone better than him gets the place in the team.
BCCI named Shardul Thakur as the replacement for Bhuvi for the three match ODI series against West Indies. Shardul has been a consistent performer for Mumbai but he failed to impress in the blue jersey. He has featured in 7 T20’s for India and picked as many wickets with includes a four wicket haul. He has also featured in 5 ODIs and lone test for the national team.
Sportstar reported that the board was confused between Umesh Yadav and Thakur but the MSK Prasad led selection committee eventually picked the Mumbai pacer over Vidarbha lad.
This is not the first injury replacement for India as earlier ace opener Shikhar Dhawan was ruled out of the series and test opener Mayank Agarwal was named his replacement.
