India has won the three match ODI series by defeating Australia by seven wickets in the final match played at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday. Earlier in the match, Virat Kohli lost the toss for the third consecutive time and Aussie captain Aaron Finch chose to bat first on a batsman friendly wicket in Bengaluru.
The visitors lost their openers early after which Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagnshame took the innings forward and took Australia to a comfortable position. Steve Smith went onto scoe 131 runs as Australia finished on 286 runs in their 50 overs, while Mohammed Shami striked four wickets for the Indian team.
Chasing a target of 287 runs, Rohit Sharma stitched a 69 run stand with KL Rahul for the first wicket to provide a solid start to India, who were Shikhar Dhawan short as he could not bat in the match following an injury.
After the departure of local boy Rahul, he added 137 runs for 2nd wicket to put India in a commanding position. After his dismissal, skipper Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer ensured that they take the India to the target easily.
This is India’s first ODI series win of the calendar year and they will now head to New Zealand for a full sledged series, starting 24th January.
