India tasted its best ever Olympics success at Tokyo where it won 7 medals including four bronze, two silver and one historic gold. The campaign started with a silver medal of Mirabai Chanu in women’s 49kg weightlifting on 24th July and it concluded on 7th August with the historic gold medal of Neeraj Chopra, which is only the second individual gold medal for India after Abhinav Bindra and the first Olympics medal in athletics almost after a decade and a first for Independent India. The Olympic came to a conclusion with the gold medal match of Serbia and Greece where the former won in the men’s water polo followed by a grand closing ceremony where bronze medalist Bajrang Punia was the flag bearer of India alongside the other 205 participating nations. With the focus now shifting to Paris Olympics 2024, Tokyo is now set to host Paralympics games from later this month to the starting of September.
The Tokyo Paralympics will feature 539 events across 22 different disciplines to be hosted at 21 venues. Its worth mentioning that Paralympics is an international sports competition for differently-abled athletes and it is split into two- Summer Paralympics and Winter Paralympics like the Olympic games. The two events alternately occur every two years.
The athletes in Paralympics compete in six different groups which are- amputee, cerebral palsy, visual impairment, spinal cord injuries, intellectual disability, and les autres.
India will send its largest-ever contingent with 54 para-athletes competing in nine sporting disciplines.
