India had a tough week in Male as they were leveled by Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, which is the lowest ranked football team in Asia. The Blue Tigers’ lackluster performance in the defense was costing them heavily and the ability to finish in the forward line added to team’s agony.
In a must win encounter against Nepal, India eked out a win against a lower ranked Nepal where Sunil Chhetri was the only difference between the two sides. India were next up against Maldives, who were coming with good run of form heading into this match. India managed to score three goals and conceded just one to win the match 3-1 to make it into the finals.
The men in blue are too reliable on the services of Sunil Chhetri in the forward line and the strikers are failing to finish which they need to improve to be able to beat Nepal in the finals. India will be looking to win their 8th SAFF title, a championship which is not a big priority for them, considering they are the highest ranked team in this region with a bunch of players and strong bench-strength but despite all this, the Blue Tigers have failed to live up to the expectations.
“They (Nepal) are the best as a team in this tournament. They might not have extraordinary individuals like Ali Ashfaq (of Maldives) but they have the best team,” Chhetri said during an interaction with reporters.
“As far as defending as a team and attacking as a team is concerned, they are the best. Fortunately, we have played against them three times in the recent past and we have understood that they are a really good side and they are very compact. We are facing the best team in the final and it will not be easy,” he added.
Nepal will be playing in their maiden SAFF championship final and they will be eager to make it count and have 100% efficiency rate when it comes to final.
