Indian weightlifter Sanjita Chanu wins gold medal in woman’s 53 kg category at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games on Friday. She was the gold winner at the 2014 CWG in 48kg category, after four years, she again finishes at the top spot in 53 kg category, outperforming defending champion Loa Dika Toua of Papua New Guinea, who was a distant second with 182 kg while New Zealand’s Rachel Leblanc-Bazinet took bronze with 181 kg.
The weightlifter from Manipur broke the existing CWG record with a lift of 84kg in the snatch and then lifted 108 in the clean & jerk to finish with a combined lift of 192kg. Earlier her stateswoman Mirabai Chanu had also broke the CWG record yesterday, and won the gold in 48 kg category.

Sanjita took an early lead by lifting 81 kg in her first attempt. New Zealand’s Rachel, managed 78 kg in her first attempt, and joined Sanjita at the 1st position by lifting 81 kg in her second attempt. Sanjita on the other hand equalled the CWG record by lifting a weight of 83 kg. She later lifted 84 kg to broke the CWG record in snatch event, which was held by fellow countrywoman Swarti Singh at the Glasgow Games in 2014.
Sanjita was way too ahead in clean and jerk as she lifted 104 kg in her first attempt and a 108 kg in her second attempt. She attempted to better the existing CWG record of 111 kg which was set by Loa in 2014. The 24-year-old however failed to lift 112 kg in her third attempt, but took gold.
Loa successfully lifted 102 kg in her first attempt but failed to lift 109 kg in her second attempt. She then opted for 113 kg in her final attempt, that could win her the gold and even better her own CWG record. That, however was not to be today as she failed to lift the weight and Sanjita claimed the gold.
