Vikas Gowda retirement: Legendary Indian discuss thrower retires at 34

Indian discuss thrower Vikas Shive Gowda retired today after competing for around 15 years at the highest level. The Mysore born thrower bagged silver and gold in 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games respectively. He also clinched a bronze in 2010 Guangzhou and silver in 2014 Incheon Asian Games. Gowda didn’t participate in any event after bagging a bronze in the Asian Championships last year in Bhubaneswar.

The news was made official by the twitter page of Athletics Federation of India.

He grew up in Frederick, Maryland in the United States. His father, Shive was coach of the 1988 Indian Olympic track team.

Vikas is an alumnus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and he was also the 2006 US NCAA National Champion in discus.

The four time Olympian is the national award holder with the best throw of 66.28 meters, which he achieved in 2012. He competed in 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 Olympics.

Gowda didn’t participate in this years Commonwealth Games as AFI has proposed the strict rule that those who do not take part in the national championships, which serve as selection trials, will not be allowed to participate in the multi-sporting events.
