4- Men’s hockey team
After rising to the 5th position in the FIH rankings, India were a clear favourites to retain their gold medal and also qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. They scored 76 goals against five teams in the Pool matches to give a clear indication about their chances for the top honours. The PR Sreejesh side top their Pool and faced a tricky opponent in Malaysia which happened to be some threat to India in the recent times.
Indian team was in the lead till the last minute of the game but conceding a last minute penalty corner goal against Malaysia costed them the match as the latter team kept their nerves in the penalty shoot-out, thanks to the efforts of their experienced goalkeeper Kumar Subramaniam.
India went on to beat Pakistan 2-1 to settle for a consolation bronze medal.
3- Kidambi Srikanth
India’s top ranked men’s singles shuttler and world number 8, suffered a shocking loss to Wong Wing Ki Vincent of Chinese Taipie in the second round. Srikanth was a top medal prospect for India but he faltered when it mattered the most. His ousted from the Asian event was a big disappointment for the fans.
