MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila have played out of their skin to book a quarter final spot at the ongoing world championship in Tokyo Japan. They have reached the stage but upstaging two higher ranked opponents than them and their biggest highlight is defeating Astrup and Rasmussen who are 8th in world ranking and the bronze medallist of last edition in Spain.
The Indian pair had a tough first round match against higher ranked Thai pair and they finally managed to hold their nerves for a 17-21, 21-17, 20-22 win. They pipped the Danish pairing of Astrup and Rasmussen in straight games 21-17, 21-16 and were up against the Singaporean duo of Terry and Hean which they won 18-21, 21-15, 21-16.
Now they will be up against three time world champion pairing of Ehsan and Setiawan and they will have a job on hand to upstage the “daddies”. The veteran pair have comfortably won their two matches of the tournament in straight games and another win from here on will ensure their fourth medal atleast at world championship.
Head to head
The Indian pair have kept the daddies on toes when the two collided but the Indonesian pair still have a clean record of 4-0 in their favour. However, the Indian pair have managed to draw the match to third game for 3 times out of the 4 matches played. Their last meeting came at 2022 Singapore Open where they won the first game and were closing down on the second game but the Indonesian pairing showed their class to win it 10-21, 21-18, 21-17.
What to expect
When we talk about the rankings, the Indian pair stands at 35th spot while the Indonesian duo enjoys a world rank of 3rd in the world. As far as the rankings are concerned, there is no match between the two but on court action can be a different affair, especially when the Indian pair have found their footing in the tournament by defeating a top 10 ranking pair. It will be a match of Indian attack vs Indonesian defense and whosoever succeeds will win the match. Indian pair have to make sure that they are sharp at the net and don’t give much chances to the Indonesians to reign supreme in the quarter final clash.
