Gautam Gambhir steps down as the captain of Delhi Daredevils, following a below par performance in the ongoing IPL season. Mumbai batsman Shreyas Iyer will take over the leadership role for remainder of the season.
“It was absolutely my decision,” said Gambhir at a press conference in New Delhi on Wednesday.
“I haven’t contributed enough. So I owe that responsibility considering where we are in the points table.”
“May be I was too desperate to turn things around and that can backfire. It could be the reason. I just couldn’t handle the pressure and when you don’t do that, you have to own that up as a leader,” Gambhir added.
“We’re very much in this competition. It was absolutely my decision, no pressure from the franchise, they’ve been absolutely sportive about it, sometimes when your conscious says it’s the right time you just take that (call).,” said Gambhir.
Shreyas Iyer thanked the coaches and team management after being named the skipper of the side.
“I want to thank the management and my coaches for appointing me as the captain of the team. It is a great honour for me,” Iyer said after being appointed as the captain of DD.
Delhi are placed at the bottom of the points table with just 1 win in 6 matches. They are on a verge of exiting the IPL, if they loose any of their remaining 8 matches.
In January, Gambhir was not retained by Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils bought him for his base price of INR 2 crore, he was soon named as the captain of the team. The two-time IPL champion captain had 7 wonderful years with KKR franchise.
