ICC’s anti-corruption unit claims this country’s bookies to be the most corrupt ones

ICC's anti-corruption unit claims this country's bookies to be the most corrupt ones

Spot fixing had a worsening effect on the cricket world in the late 90’s that saw some champions athletes like Mohammad Azharuddin and Hansi Cronje get caught in the dirty deeds. There was a time when bookies and fixing was looking like a thing of past but it has certainly came back and is again grasping its grip on cricket yet again.

ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit is trying their best to keep these things away from cricket but their recent report claims that most of the bookies in International cricket are from India.

Recently former Sri Lanka opener Sanath Jayasuriya was charged for violating ICC’s anti-corruption code. He has been found guilty of not co-operating with the investigation team.

“In Sri Lanka, it was both local and Indian corruptors. In most other parts of the world it is mostly corrupt Indian bookies,” CC’s General Manager ACU, Marshall, told ESPNCricinfo.

Marshall says there are 12-20 corrupt bookies in International cricket

“During the briefing (to England and Sri Lanka players), we showed names and pictures of active corruptors in cricket who were trying to get at players both in Sri Lanka and at tournaments elsewhere in the world,” Marshall said.

“So we have openly shared the current information of active corruptors, we have shown their pictures, given their names and details. This way we felt the players are better informed. The exercise has already lead to new information coming forward from the teams,” he added..
