(PC: BFI): The Indian Men and Women Basketball Teams departed for Australia in preparation for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games on Monday. The Indian basketball contingent will arrive in Gold Coast,Australia three weeks ahead of the games. Earlier Basketball federation of India announced Indian basketball team for Commonwealth Games 2018. Yadwinder Singh was announced as captain of the Men’s Team, he is the only player for India who will be playing in his second commonwealth games. Shireen Limaye will feature as the captain of women’s team.

Indian players will continue their training at the Runaway Bay Super Sports Centre which was previously going on at the Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium, Bengaluru since 1st February 2018. Not to forget, this will be the second time since 2006 that basketball is a part of the Commonwealth Games.
In History
In Commonwealth Games of 2006, Indian men’s team were placed with Australia, Nigeria and Scotland in group A. Unfortunately the team didn’t manage to win a single match and finished last in their group. In the classification matches, the team finished 8th after loosing to Barbados and South Africa. On the other hand, women’s team were placed with Australia, England and Mozambique in Group A. The Indian women’s eked out a win against Mozambique and finished third in their group. In the classification matches, they defeated Malta but lost to Mozambique to finish 6th.
