Kings XI Punjab purchased Ravichandran Ashwin for Rs 7.6 crores in 2018 IPL auction, in order to change their fortunes. They named him the captain from the 2018 season but he failed to create the magic. Preity Zinta owned side finished a disappointing 7th in 2018 season and went onto better one place to 6th spot in 2019 season.
It is learned that Delhi Capitals is set to buy him from Kings XI Punjab. Capitals had a dream run in this year’s IPL after they reached the knockout stages after a gap of 8 long years, under the leadership of young Shreyas Iyer and coach Ricky Ponting. The Delhi based franchise boasts of some young cricketers and having an experienced lad in Ashwin will help their cause of maiden IPL triumph in 2020.
“Ashwin’s release approval is already with the BCCI and an announcement is likely soon. Delhi Capitals showed interested in him and KXIP, after thinking it through, felt they needed a younger spinner in the squad,” India.com quoted a report as saying.
Last week, Delhi Capitals advisor and former India skipper- Sourav Ganguly said that the team would be happy to have the services of the 32-year-old off spinner from Chennai. Ashwin recently feature for the Indian test team in the two match series against West Indies but could not find a place in the playing XI.
Digitalsporty’s view on the trade
Delhi has handful of spinners in their team with the likes of Axar Patel, Amit Mishra, Rahul Tewatia, Jalaj Saxena, Mayank Markande, J Suchith and Sandeep Lamichhane. The team management had a tough job in picking the best candidate for the planing XI and with Ashwin coming in the picture, the story will be no different. Capitals could have looked for a solid middle order batsman to strengthen their batting order which does not look strong on the paper as compared to other teams.
