In a dramatic final, that went to the rare gold medal shootoff, India’s Mehuli ghosh claimed silver in women’s 10m air rifle at Gold Coast CWG, after she was trailing Veloso till the last shot of the final, scored a perfect 10.9 to take things to a shootout. Ghosh herself alongside the crowd was stunned by a perfect shot at the target. However she missed gold by a whisker, as she managed 9.9 against the Singapore shooter’s 10.3, in the shoot-off. Ghosh scored a total of 247.2, whereas gold medalist Martina Lindsay of Singapore scored a total of 247.2.
Defending champion Apurvi Chandela of India, who broke her qualifying record at the event, had to settle for bronze after a disappointing 22nd shot of the competition, she scored a total of 225.3.
Apurvi and Mehuli had previously finished first and fifth in the qualification round respectively. With a score of 423.2, Apurvi set a new qualification Games record. Mehuli, on the other hand, scored 413.7 as the top eight contenders entered the final.
Earlier in the day, Indian shooters Jitu Rai and Om Prakash Mitharwal won gold and bronze medals respectively in the men’s 10m air pistol event.
With this feat, India now stands third on the points table with 17 medals in total, including seven in shooting alone.
