Melbourne's Melton City roads named after Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar

Some of the Indian cricketers enjoy a great fan following in Australia but Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar are the top on the list. The same fandom can be seen in Rockbank, the western suburb in Melton City Council, which has streets named after some of the legends of the game. An upcoming housing estate decided to carve the name of few cricketers and name the streets after them. This marketing strategy to lure customers has worked wonders as the inquiries have doubled ever since this development.

Owning a house in ‘Kohli Crescent’ or Tendulkar Drive’, or maybe own a villa at the ‘Kallis Way’ or ‘Dev Terrace’ might be possible.

“As soon as we announced street names after cricketers, inquiries doubled,” property developer Varun Sharma was quoted as saying by SBS Hindi.

“Who would not like to live on ‘Kohli Crescent? You never know Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli might drive by the street when he is in Melbourne this December,” Sharma added and noted the arrival Virat Kohli when India tours Australia for a swashbuckling cricket series.

The other cricketers other than Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar after which the streets were named are- Wasim Akram (Akram Way), Richard Hadlee (Hadlee Street), Kapil Dev (Dev Terrace), Jacques Kallis (Kallis Way), Sir Garfield Sobers (West Indies), Steve Waugh (Waugh Street).

Melton’s city mayor Cr Lara Carli was also happy with the development and positive reviews. “Street names in our city are usually submitted by developers and approved by Council if they meet Office of Geographic Names guidelines. It seems these cricket-themed names are already popular with cricketer fans in our community and beyond,” the Mayor said.

The time will only tell if the developers can make the most out of their project in the name of cricketers or people will still look for basic amenities before buying it.
