After an average World Cup where Virat Kohli could not match his standards and failed to score a century, he is back to the basics by scoring a century after five odd months and 11 innings. He used to score half centuries but failed to convert them into big hundreds.
He struck the 42nd century of his career at a time when India was in a tricky situation against West Indies in the second ODI at Port of Spain, Trininad. After the dismissal of Rishabh Pant, the men in blue were 101-3 at one stage with all left to the under firing middle order. Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer held the innings together to take India par 200. The Indian captain went onto notch 120 runs off 125 balls before he fell to Carlos Brathwaite. India went onto score 279/7 at the end of 50 overs and in reply West Indies fell short by 59 runs in the innings which was cut short by rain which forced the revised target of 270 runs in 46 overs.
“Feels good to get a hundred when the team wanted me to get one. Shikhar and Rohit didn’t get a big one. One of the top three has always got the big one. A senior man had to step up and today was my opportunity to step up,” Kohli said after being adjudged man of the match.
Predicting how many centuries can Virat Kohli score
The Indian captain is just 30 and he is allready at the second spot in the list of most hundreds in ODI career. He stands with 42 centuries in 229 innings and is behind Sachin Tendulkar with 49 centuries. Fans are certain that the Delhi lad will go on to break the record of Tendulkar but they are wondering about the number of centuries that Virat Kohli will score at the end of career.
Renowned cricket statistician- Mohandas Menon put some mathematics in action and predicted that Virat Kohli will end with 83 ODI centuries in his ODI career.
“Virat Kohli now has 42 ODI 100s in 229 inns. At the current conversation rate and form… * he can reach 50th ODI 100 in his 272nd inns, ie another eight 100s in his next 43 inns. * he can take his tally to 83 ODI 100s in 452 inns!,” Mohandas Menon said in a tweet.
