India is in a commanding position in the ongoing first test against New Zealand at Kanpur. With 284 runs target set by India, New Zealand got off to a horrific start as they lost Will Young early to R Ashwin(2) but night watchman William Somerville and Tom Latham ensured that no further damage incurred on the 4th day.
The two batsman steadily hung on the 5th day but Umesh Yadav finally break the resistance and got Somerville(36) on the very first ball after lunch to send him packing. Tom Latham(52) and Kane Williamson(24*) looked solid in the center but R Ashwin had other plans as he bowled the former batsman to complete a milestone in his test career.
With this wicket of Latham, Ashwin became the 3rd most successful Indian bowler in test cricket with 418 wickets and counting. The Chennai man surpassed Harbhajan Singh(417) wickets who can be considered as the greatest ever finger spinner to take the field for India in whites.
The great Kapil Dev’s milestone will be next for Ashwin as he just 16 wickets away from the Haryana Hurricane. Anil Kumble takes the numero uno position with 619 wickets to his name in the red ball cricket.
When talking about the overall list, Ashwin now takes the 13th spot with the first position taken by Sri Lankan great Muttiah Muralitharan with 800 wickets.
