England’s dream of winning a world cup after 52 years was shattered after an inspired Croatia thumped the “Three Lions” 2-1 to become the 13th team to reach the world cup finals. Croatia are the first team to play three games in extra time of any world cup and this proved to be beneficial for them in the semi final clash. Earlier, England draw first blood when Kieran Trippier scored in the 5′ minute of the game though a set piece. This was England’s 9th goal from set piece. Both the teams continued to attack but no one was successful in putting the ball past the net. Just when the things were looking in England’s favour, Croatia striked in 68′ minute through Ivan Perisic’s left footer. In the regulation time no team was able to find the winner that send the match to the extra time, which was always a plus point for Croatia.
Luka Modric’s team look dominant from the first minute of extra time and it was the 109′ minute when Mario Mandzukic striked and gave a 2-1 lead to Croatia. England looked frustrated and continued building some attacks to find the equalizer but at last they were unable to find one and their dream now gets shifted to Qatar in 2022.
