France advanced to the semi finals of World cup as they thumped a promising Uruguay 2-0, who were without the services of their star striker Edinson Cavani. This was the second time when France entered the semi final after they won the title in 1998 at home. Raphael Varane scored in the 40′ minute of the game through header from a free kick. Antoine Griezmann sealed the match for the European heavyweights in the 61′ minute through a big goalkeeping blunder by Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.
