The 32-year-old Spain captain made it clear that Barcelona striker is way better than Maradona post the match in Kazan.
“In Argentina they know that Maradona is light years away from the best Argentine player in history, which for me is Lionel Messi,” he said.
Messi led Argentina played an unexpected draw against the debutants Iceland and also failed to score the penalty, which got him immense criticism from his home country.
On the other hand, Spain consolidated their position in Group B alongside Portugal with a win over Iran. The Ramos led side play their last encounter against Morocco at Kaliningrad Stadium on Tuesday.
“They [Iran] went out to waste time, whereas we like to win in a different way,” Ramos said.
“We leave happy. We’ve taken another step forward and now we have to try to top our group, it’s our objective. I still think we can improve in all aspects.”
