Team India is currently having a dream run in the world cup with three wins against big teams like South Africa, Australia and Pakistan and a rain washed game against New Zealand. However, Shikhar Dhawan suffered a thumb fracture in the game against Australia after Pat Cummins’ ball hit his hand. He went onto score a hundred but didn’t come out to field.
He went for a scan in Leeds where it was confirmed that he has suffered a hairline fracture. The team management was confident that the Delhi lad will be back in the squad in 2-3 weeks but it will take more than expected time which has ruled him out of the world cup.
In the game against Pakistan, Rohit Sharma opened the innings with his new partner- KL Rahul and the two managed to put up a 136 run stand to build a solid foundation for India.
“Shikhar Dhawan has a fracture at the base of the first metacarpal of his left hand. He will remain in cast until mid-July which rules him out of ICC World Cup,” Team India manager Sunil Subramaniam said in the press conference.
“We have written to the ICC requesting Rishabh Pant as replacement,” he added.
Rishabh Pant to replace him
The 21-year-old batsman just has the experience of five ODIs but he may be the trump for India considering his fearless approach of batting. He will replace Shikhar Dhawan in the team and strengthen the Indian middle order. In his presence, India can afford to keep wickets in hand and play slowly at the start of the innings and build a solid foundation for Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya to fire in the death overs.
Pant allready has a test hundred in England when India toured the country last year for five match test series.
