Dussehra celebration soon turned into a tragic happening in Amritsar as a running train mowed down the spectators who were standing at the track. The incident took place when a huddle of people were watching Ravana effigy get down into ashes and flocked to the railway track when 74643 Jalandhar-Amritsar ran over them. The tragic incident took place near Joda Phatak area in Amritsar.
According to reports close to 60 people have lost their lives and the death toll is expected to increase. Hundreds of people were injured who were taken to the nearby Government hospital.
It was a tragic happening as the bodies of several unidentified people were lying on the track with blood flow all around.
Meanwhile, sports fraternity have took to twitter to express their grief on the devastating happening.
“My prayers are with the families of those affected by the terrible train accident in Amritsar yesterday,” said India captain Virat Kohli.
“My deepest condolences to the families of victims of the Dussehra accident. Strictest action should be taken against organisers for choosing a spot so close to tracks. I saw the video ystd it was heartbreaking to c so many ppl lose their lives like this. #AmritsarTrainAccident,” said India’s pistol shooter Heena Sidhu.
“Deeply saddened by the tragic #AmritsarTrainAccident. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims,” said Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary.
“Just heard about the Heart-wrenching news of the terrible train accident in Amtitsar. My prayers for the families affected. Those who wish to donate blood should arrive at the Civil Hospital and Guru Nanak Hospital in Amritsar,” said former India opener Virender Sehwag.
“Really tragic incident in India. Condolences with the affected families may Allah give them the strength to overcome the loss. May Allah protect us all,” said former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi.
