Sri Lankan batsman Danushka Gunathilaka has been suspended by the Sri Lankan cricket board after he was found breaching the code of conduct. A Norwegian woman has accused his friend of raping her in a hotel room. Gunatilkha and his friend whose name was not publicized took two Norwegian women to the team hotel in Colombo on Sunday.
The other woman later accused a British passport holder man of Sri Lankan origin of raping her. He was later arrested by the police.
“The 26-year-old is under arrest and we are continuing our investigations. A Norwegian tourist made the complaint of rape.” However, there was no allegation against Gunathilaka,” a police official told AFP.
The move comes as a shock to the Sri Lankan cricket fans as Gunathilaka has been their highest run scorers in the recently concluded test series against South Africa, where Sri Lanka completed a white wash.
According to Sri Lanka cricket board, a player has to be in the hotel room by midnight and can’t have any guests during the time of national duty. The SLC will also hold back Gunathilaka’s match fee for the recently concluded Test match until the outcome of the inquiry. Though, the cricketer took the field during the 4th day of 2nd test match where Sri Lanka bowled out South Africa for 290 runs to win the match and series 2-0.
The 27-year-old has featured in 4 Tests, 33 ODIs and 15 T20Is for Sri Lanka.
