The IPL governing council is planning to add two more teams and make it a 10 game tournament in IPL 2020. The tournament was a 10-team event when Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Pune Warriors India were added to the fray in 2011 season. The franchise from Kochi were eliminated from the next season following the dispute amongst the owners as they failed to pay the 10% bank guarantee of the total franchise fee.
Sahara India Pariwar owned Pune Warriors India participated in 2011, 2012, 2013 season before withdrawing from the league. The reason, according to BCCI, was the encashing of the team’s bank guarantee after Sahara defaulted on paying the entire franchise fee.

While the next season of the most richest cricket league may promise to be a thriller with 10 teams but the BCCI wants to cover all the bases first and not wish to repeat the fiasco that happened in 2011.
“The plan is ready. Expansion is a certainty. What needs to be worked out is the tender process and how to go about it. Expect things to fall in place soon, certainly before the next IPL edition,” sources told TOI.
The owners and executives of IPL met in London and came to the conclusion that the tournament would benefit from the introduction of two new franchises in 2020.
Which stadiums may benefit if two teams are added
According to reports, the Adani group is eager to secure the Ahmedabad franchise after a failed attempt in 2010. Tata Group is eager to secure a franchise in Jharkhand and may play their home games in Jamshedpur or Ranchi. Some buisnessmen are also looking forward to secure a franchise in Uttar Pradesh, possibly Kanpur’s Green Park or Lucknow’s Ekana International stadium. RPG- Sanjeev Goenka Group is eager to secure Pune franchise.
