Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra won a historic athletics gold medal to become India’s second ever individual Olympic gold medallist after shooter Abhinav Bindra, who won the top prize in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. It was the last day of India at Tokyo Olympics and a huge disappointment came through when Aditi Ashok came fourth and was just one shot short of a medal. However, Bajrang Punia turned the day upside down after he took down the third seed Niyazbekov from Kazakhstan 8-0 and it was followed it up with a gold for Neeraj Chopra.
Neeraj began his quest for medal with a massive throw of 87.03 meters and was leading the pack after the end of first attempt. He bettered it with the second throw of 87.58m which proved decisive and won him the gold. Vadlejch of Czech Republic came up with a throw of 86.67m in the fifth attempt to inch closer to Chopra but it was not enough as he won silver medal. Fellow countryman Vesely almost came through the ranks as he was eyeing elimination at one stage but his throw of 85.44m in the third attempt was enough to win him a bronze.
