For someone who had shown no interest in playing cricket as a child, Mithali Raj has sure come a long way. Few know that the Indian captain, who became the highest run-getter in women’s ODIs, trained to be a Bharatnatyam dancer in her younger years. The fact that she would be a record-breaker in cricket, however, was predicted when she was just 10 years old.
It was the heroinic of the lady that almost won India its first womens world cup. The Arjuna and Padma Shri awardee led the Indian side brilliantly in the Women’s World Cup leading the team to the final where they lost to England by 9 runs. Even though she failed to win the World Cup, personally, she had a great tournament scoring 409 runs.
India’s performance in world cup, inspired many womans in the country. In a country which only focus on mens cricket have eventually got a new inspiration in Mithali Raj and her team. The 35 years old have given a new hope to girls who are willing to invest their career in cricket. A biopic is under production depicting the story and struggle of Indian captain.
