2. Sania Mirza Top Indian tennis players
Poster girl of Indian tennis continued her good run of form in International tennis. Sania began her year as world number one in woman doubles and is closing on a ninth rank. India’s top doubles specialist finished as runner up in Australia open besides Ivan Dodig in mixed doubles. The Indo-Croatian pair lost to America’s Abigail Spears and Colombia’s Juan Sebastian Cabal 2-4 4-6.
Sania alongwith her Chinese partner Peng Shuai went right down to the Semi finals of US open in woman doubles. The Indo-Chinese pair eventually lost in the semi final 4-6, 4-6 to the Swiss-Taiwanese pair of Martina Hingis and Chan Yung-Jan. She partnered with Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan to feature in semi-finals of the Italian Open tennis tournament. 3rd seed Indo-Kazakh pair lost 3-6 6-7 against second seeds Martina Hingis of Switzerland and Chan Yung-jan of Chinese Taipei in a semi-final of the red clay event.
Sania recently gave birth to a baby boy and is expected to return to the court in 2019.
