India’s Venkat Rahul Ragala wins gold in men’s 85 kg weightlifting at Gold Coast CWG. In the process the 20-year-old from Guntur becomes the fourth Indian weightlifter to win a gold. Earlier Mirabai Chanu, Sanjita Chanu and Sathish Sivalingam have won gold in weightlifting.

Rahul lifted a total of 338kg (151kg+187kg) to finish on top of the podium. Samoa’s Don Opeloge gave him a tough fight, but ended with a total of 331kg (151kg+180kg). Both the lifters opted for 191kg as their final clean and jerk lift and both of them failed but Rahul clinched the top prize attributable to Opeloge’s failed second attempt at a 188kg lift.

If Opeloge managed to lift a 191 kg in final attempt, then he would have won the gold and Rahul had to settle for silver, but it was not to be today.

Rahul impressed with a successful lift of 147kg in his first snatch attempt. He failed to lift 151 kg in his second attempt, but later went on to successfully lift the weight. He continued his good work lifting 182kg in his first clean and jerk attempt to jump to top spot in the standings.

His second lift of 187kg took him to a total weight of 338kg that remained his best as he failed in the final attempt of 191kg.

Malaysia’s Muhamad Fazul Azrie Mohdad won bronze with a total lift of 328 kgs.
