Women's World Cup 2022: How India can still qualify for the semi-finals after South Africa/West Indies rain wash off

India’s chances for reaching the semi finals of the ongoing women’s world cup took a hit after the match between West Indies and South Africa was washed off due to rain. India had a close look at the match because the result could have decided their future in the tournament. A win for South Africa meant that India had almost qualified for the semi-finals without bothering much, but a win for West Indies would have forced India to win their last group stage match against the South African woman.

Now with the wash off, one points each were awarded to both the teams that pushed India down the table to number 5. West Indies are placed at third position with 7 points in seven matches whereas, South Africa are behind table toppers Australia with 9 points in six matches. India will now play South Africa in a must win encounter and if they lose, they are out of the world cup.

India will face South Africa on Sunday (March 27) at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. This will be the final league game of the tournament. The weather update of Christchurch on Sunday looks bright and there is no chances of rain.

Point wise explanation

– If India wins against South Africa, they directly qualify for the semi finals

– If India loses the game against South Africa, they have to hope for England to lose their last group stage game against Bangladesh with a moderate margin.

– If rain washes away the match, India will end up with 7 points and a net run rate of +0.768 which is better than of West Indies’ -0.890, will make them qualify for the semi finals directly.
